The Evacuation and the Assessment
In
contrast to the remainder of the campaign, the evacuation was a
triumph of organiation and discipline. The troops at Anzac and Sulva
were informed on 12 December that they were to be taken off,but
to conceal this from the Turks empty supply-boxes were taken in
during the day, and at night men were taken off from the jetties
which had been build on the beaches.Despite the enormous damage
it caused to the Turkish Army and national resources, the Gallipoli
campaign was undoubtedly a disaster for the Allies.Probably about
87,000 Turks, 25,000 British, almost 10,000 French, 7,300 Australian,
2,400 New Zealanders and 1,700 Indians lost their lives in what
was a futile campaign.
